Tommi Inkinen Professor

University of Turku, Finland


Tommi Inkinen is a Professor of Economic Geography at the University of Turku (UTU), Finland. Previously he was a Professor of Economic Geography (2012-2016) and an acting Professor of Human Geography (2008-2012) at the University of Helsinki (UH). In 2014 he also was the vice head of the Department of Geosciences and Geography at the UH. After Helsinki he worked as a Research Director and a Vice Director at the Brahea Centre of UTU from 2016 till the end of 2020. Prof. Inkinen holds also a title of Docent (Adjunct Professor) of Regional Studies (UH). His latest projects include “Geography and Innovative Competitiveness? Finnish Knowledge Regions in European and Global Economy” funded by the Academy of Finland. His research interests primarily cover the issues of innovation geography, urban technology, maritime studies, and industrial systems. These include the regional and social structuring of innovation systems, technology integration, regional development and logistics of transport. He's latest books include Geographies of Disruption (with Tan Yigitcanlar) by Springer (2019); and Smart Cities and Innovative Urban Technologies by Routledge (2021) and Sustainable Mobility and Transport (2022) by MDPI (both edited with Tan Yigitcanlar and Mark Wilson). Inkinen is a current chair of the International Geographical Union’s (IGU) Innovation, Information and Technology Commission. He is also a current member of the Research Council for Culture and Society of the Academy of Finland. Inkinen was an Editor-In-Chief (2010-2013) of a peer-reviewed quarterly national journal Terra, Finnish Geographical Journal.
